How to find a personal trainer

Starting a fitness journey on your own isn’t easy. You’re working to build new habits while trying to break old ones. You can get help by working with a personal trainer, but not everybody knows how to find a personal trainer. At Paru Fitness, we can help you identify traits you want in a trainer and things about your personal preferences that can help.

Know what you want from a trainer

It’s important to know what you want to get out of a personal trainer when you’re searching for one. Are you looking for someone to hold you accountable and make sure you’re getting your scheduled exercise in when you’re supposed to? Do you need the motivation to get those last few reps up at the end of your workout? Know what you want to get from a personal trainer before you start looking because not all trainers are the same.

Where and when do you want to work out?

Make a plan for where and when you want to work out before you hire a personal trainer. It’s common to find trainers who will work with you at a park, your home, via video chat, or the gym of your choice. However, some trainers are employed by a gym and are required to work with you at the gym. You can eliminate a large contingent of trainers by deciding where you prefer to exercise.

In addition to being limited to a gym location, some trainers will limit their hours, which might not be conducive to your busy schedule. Set a tentative schedule for when you might exercise, so you can speak with a trainer about it to find out if they’re available when you are.

Decide on a gender

It might seem strange to think about having to decide on the gender of your trainer, but not everybody feels comfortable working with a trainer of the opposite gender. Most concerns about the gender of a personal trainer are likely psychological, but they shouldn’t be discounted. It’s not uncommon to feel vulnerable when you’re working out, so you want to be with someone with whom you feel comfortable during that time.

Understand what motivates you

There are many different motivation techniques, and they don’t all work for everybody. Someone who thrives off positive reinforcement won’t work well with somebody who likes to yell or get in your face when you’re lifting. In contrast, someone might need negative reinforcement and berating to help them push through the last few reps of the day. Know what motivates you and find a trainer who can help. We can’t always motivate ourselves to get through a workout, so it helps to have somebody on our team.

Consider cost

Finding a personal trainer shouldn’t break the bank. Chances are that you only get so much money each month, and you have other obligations to meet. Any trainer who’s worth hiring is going to understand that you have a budget. While you might not be able to afford to work with a specific trainer, the good ones will understand if you’re not willing to break your budget. You can typically find someone who can fit within a reasonable price point to train you.
